Being in the military, we moved approx. 25 times. Most often with moving companies, but also several times on our own. One thing that clearly comes to mind is, don't use the huge appliance boxes for packing, unless you have several very strong men to help carry them. Don't make boxes heavier than what can be carried by no more than two people. More than that and you just have awkwardness, which slows you down.
Be very cognizant of storage space in the place you're moving to. There is nothing worse than getting into your new home and finding you have no place to put anything. Definitely get rid of unneeded stuff. My rule was always, if it hasn't been used for a year, get rid of it, unless it's a keepsake, important papers etc.
