Live in a blue world

A scientific research says that 80% of people claim their favorite color to be blue. My favorite is green, but I don’t dislike blue either. I have collected a few decors in blue. Perhaps you will make an idea about blue design rooms. Here are the photos:

Blue is relaxing. I think that because the sky is blue and when I look at it, I feel very relaxed and peaceful. Combine the colors carefully to get a cozy room. Let your imagination free and decorate in your own style. Have fun!

Music Sofa

Music Sofa

While surfing the Internet I found the Music Sofa. It was designed by Giongkun Wuqiongkun. The Music Sofa features built-in wireless speakers and a CD player. The surround effect will enhance your listening experience.

You need to design your living room in a futuristic style to be compatible with the Music Sofa. Just take a look at the picture and make yourself an idea about the perfect decor. There are no price details, neither the availability date. Maybe it is just a concept product, but I am sure it will get some fans.

To choose IKEA or not?

IKEAIKEA is an international company that sells modern low-cost furniture, mostly being assembled by the customers. IKEA is an acronym comprising the initials of the founder’s name, Ingvar Kamprad, and home village, Elmtaryd, Agunnaryd. The company was funded in Sweden in 1943. Since then it developed in a huge furniture retailer. Many people like IKEA, but others hate their products. Here, I will put down a little debate on IKEA.

Five reasons why to choose IKEA

1. Great design ideas. Personally what I like the most at IKEA are the designed rooms you can find in each store. Some of them are quite impressive. Even if you don’t like the whole room design, it inspires you to make your own plan. It gives you ideas.

2. Modern and utilitarian furniture. The main purpose for IKEA designers is to make things as easy as possible. I mean they try to create modern furniture that saves your space. Besides, the furniture helps you to organize your room in the best way.

3. Eco-friendly products. Most of the products are greener. Because I like the lamps and lighting devices, I always check that sector in IKEA. I saw they promote many low energy consumption bulbs. Another aspect that I want to discuss about are the materials used to make the furniture. From what I saw at the local store, the furniture is made of wood mostly. The wood is ecological, so IKEA protects the environment.

4. Do-it-yourself products. The low-cost policy has brought it the success. Assembling the furniture by yourself costs you less money. I have always loved to construct something by myself. Sometimes could be harder, but when you fulfill the task you are proud of your work.

5. Great stores design. The IKEA stores are really ingenious. They have one entrance and one exit, so the customers have to walk through the entire store. That matters in terms of sales. Furthermore, I like those stores that have restaurants with Swedish foods and groceries that sell Swedish-made products.

Five reasons to avoid IKEA

1. Furniture for the masses. The products sold in IKEAs tend to become kitsches. The low price permits to all people to have access at IKEA’s furniture or decorations. So, I don’t like the idea that all my friends to have the same furniture in their homes. Or, when I get in a new house I don’t want to see the same curtains as mine. But that’s the cost for low-cost products.

2. Cheap products. And when I say cheap I refer to the materials used. I have checked labels from many products and what I have seen? Made in China. Some are bad quality, I am telling you… IKEA offers guarantees, but I still become uncertain to buy.

3. The catalog “lie”. I had the surprise to read the catalog, to make an impression and to find another price for the whole wardrobe. The big product has a price, then you need to pay for shelves, for metal bar and so on. If you want that product, you probably will buy it, but you pay more than the initial budget.

4. Aggressive marketing. “Just pack up, ship out, find a place of your own. And for all your new things, you know where to come. Make a fresh start!” was the slogan that attract the criticism for trivializing marriage breakups. The 2007 IKEA catalog got in a controversy concerning a dog in the interior-front-cover photo depicting what appeared at first glance to be a human-looking penis. The company told that the object in discussion is the dog’s leg.

5. DIY not so funny for others. When you mess up the furniture is not so funny. The do-it-yourself policy could bring a lot of trouble for the unexperienced customers. If they don’t have the tools or the skills to assemble the furniture, it will broke or accidents could happen. In this case a specialist would be the most appropriate advice. But that costs money too…

Another book shelf idea

After you read here about the screen/shelf we present you a new book shelf idea. Picked by Hand is the company that designed the shelves in discussion. For this project it won the award at an international design competition organized by the Furniture Manufacturers’ Association of Asahikawa, in Japan. The project named Designer bookshelves impressed the jury by simplicity and subtlety.

You can acquire ‘Designer bookshelves’ directly from the Picked by Hand’s website. The price tag goes around $440 but adding the shipping costs you will pay now less than $515. I can’t tell you if the product is eligible for trading around the world. The company has offices in United States and Argentina. The Americas should be covered I think.

Yakuza table

Yakuza table

This item has won the first prize at Interior innovation award imm Cologne 2006. The Yakuza table was designed like a tattooed wooden body. If you take a look at the table’s body you can see the tattoo with Japanese motives. The wood texture acts as skin for the tattoo print, which is unique for every item because of the digital printing technology.

Yakuza table

Yakuza table measures 110L x 55W x 35H cm. Its design reflects the Japanese traditional style. It expresses a strong cultural and personal identity.

How to design a perfect garden

Gardening, what a pleasure! I think anyone would love to have a beautiful and relaxing garden. Some people do the job themselves, others pay for it. Nevertheless it is more fun to do it yourself. Thus you should know some tips to build a remarkable garden.

1. Plan your garden space. To obtain the best from the space allocated for the garden, you need to make a plan. Most people neglect to design a landscape plan for their gardens. So, they start planting flowers and bushes and discover the colors are totally mixed or the space wasn’t used to a maximum. My advice to avoid that mess is to write down a plan. Take a pen, a paper and draw your garden.

2. Conceive a scheme for planting. A gardening expert suggested to first plant the specials (usually large deciduous trees), then the skeletons (evergreens and hedges). The next on the list are the decoratives (flowering shrubs or tall grasses) and lastly the pretties (spring and summer-blooming perennials). However, your scheme can be personal. Do it your way, but remain focused on these guidelines.

3. Consider the climate parameters. Even if you live in a temperate climate area, in a tropical zone or you just want a greenhouse garden, you should consider which plants fit the best. For example you won’t be able to plant palm trees in cold climates. They won’t pass the winter, that’s for sure! On the other hand sweet alyssums and nasturtiums prefer cooler weather. First you should study which plants are specific to your climate area and which can adapt. In this way you won’t have flowers that never bloom, or scorched plants.

Peonies4. The plants. There are many categories of plants: annuals, biennials, perennials, bulbs, shrubs, ornamental grass etc. You should choose those that give the perfect harmony for your garden. The annuals complete their whole life cycle in one growing season. The biennials complete their life in two seasons while the perennials live for three or more years.

5. Single color gardens or combined pastels. I read that garden designers prefer the single color gardens because the they are sophisticated. The secret is to use varying shades from the same color. On the other hand, the combined pastels inspire excitement and have an eye-catchy effect. If own a big garden, then you won’t have trouble using multiple colors. Red and orange are more appropriate for hot summers. Another secret is to create contrasts. Use for example combined colors: red and yellow, blue and yellow, orange and purple etc. One thing to pay attention to: do not combine too many colors, because you can create a crowded effect.

I have found some interesting gardens that I want to share with you. Here are the photos:

I hope my advice has helped you. I will continue to write about gardening, as I’ve discovered it is a new passion.

Flexible screen with multi-use shelves

This is another idea for saving space in your crowded home. The flexible screen I will write about was design by Christopher Douglas for Material Furniture. It could be used just as a classic screen or as displaying shelf. The circular cut-outs have locking mechanisms, so you can utilize the shelves to display all kind of things.

Flexible screen

As I see it, I would use that flexible screen for my terrace to arrange my flower-pots. Each cut-out has 19″ in diameter which means the height when it is open is 9.5″. Some of my flower-pots would fit incredibly well.

Flexible screen

The regular screen features only 3 panels, but if you want more, you need to contact the producers. The flexible screen with shelves is available in Maple (standard) or Walnut (+$150). For the moment this item is out of stock.

Nice Folding Chairs

I saw this chair at Design Nobis, a company specialized in creativity design. They have many collections, one of them being the Chairs and Armchairs. Searching through that collection, you will find quite interesting chairs. I have spotted the Floger Folding Chair.

Nice Folding Chairs

Its innovative and futuristic design attracted me from the first sight. It looks very comfortable too. Personal I like this lemon color, but the Floger chairs come in blue, green, orange and purple. So, you have the option to choose from these. I didn’t find details about pricing or stores where you can find the folding Floger chairs. However, the company is from Turkey (Ankara) and I don’t think they have stores across Europe. For more details check their website.

Fashionable Loop LED lamps

Today, I will confess. I really like the lamps and lighting designs. I have just found some interesting LED lamps. First I want to share with you a few photos to capture your attention.

Loop LED lamp

Trokk16, designed those Loop LED lamps. They are some Norwegian guys from Bergen National Academy of the Arts. The members focus on furniture and lamps design. Their projects were awarded several times. Loop lamp was awarded at the 2007 Stockholm Furniture Fair with Prixluxo Award. The Loop LED lamp will be produced at industrial scale. It uses just 5W to create that light. For now, it is just a prototype. Who knows, maybe we will see them at IKEA.

Check Trokk16′s website.
