Tub or no tub?

tubGiven that we live in the world of movement and the era of speed, do we need tubs when mostly all we do is shower? Plus, the tub takes up a lot of precious space, time to fill, waste of water and so on. Why do we need it? Well, let’s see, for start two words: children and pets. For babies, we have their little mini tubs, it’s safer. But for a 4-6 year old it can get frustrating to shower. Have you ever tried getting in that cabin with a 6 year old to give him or her a shower without getting yourself wet? I’m telling you, it’s impossible! So, you either get naked and shower together (this can get ugly in time) or wear a raincoat. AND you can’t expect them to shower on their own, can you? Will they remember to wash behind their ears?

And sure, there’s pets. It’s pretty sick to get naked, grab your cat, get in the shower cabin, close the door and get the water running. Not to mention the nice red stripes you can acquire. However you look at it, a tub is a convenient space-waste in situations like these. If you have multiple bathrooms I can’t see where the problem really is. You don’t need to have a tub in every one of them, but leave at least one in your home, believe me,it can be a lifesaver. Even if you don’t plan having children or pets, but plan on moving, your house will sell better if it has a tub, trust me.

Ceiling color

When you look at the title, what comes in your mind? Let me guess: white! Why do we mostly paint our ceilings white? Well, I don’t know the origin of this habit, but I do know it’s effect. A room with a white ceiling appears larger than it really is, in height that is. So, if you have a low ceiling I wouldn’t go for anything else except white. If you have a tall empty room, you should darken the ceiling color, to give the room a little intimacy. I’d go for the color of the walls, but never darker. Do not use the same paint that you used for the walls, because the ceiling is darker in general. Or, start with the ceiling and when done, add a little more pigment, to darken the paint for your walls. Either way, you will get a more pleasant, welcoming room.

Brighten up your colors

dark yellow

It often occurs that people put too much pigment in their paint to make sure that the color comes out right. Most of the times they regret it, because the color on the wall is much brighter, or darker than expected. This is when I come in. Sure, I could say repaint and problem solved, but that, you could figure out on your own. Actually, I don’t know of any method to use for dimming the colors, because mostly, it depends on the color and paint you used. However, if a problem like this occurs, where the only solution is repainting, I jump in like a child and say: why not play a little? You’ve got nothing to lose. Have you ever heard of ragging or sponging? They are methods of adding a different color texture on an already painted wall. Your base coat is the color you don’t like. Feel free to mix a new color (your choice), grab a sponge, rag, newspaper or there are even special texture rollers, and get to work. You can also use these tools simultaneously for an even more unique effect. If you still don’t like it, repaint. But I’ll ask again: why not try? It’s fun and you may even get something rebel and aesthetic out of it. Plus, you release the stress you gained when the first painting was done and you realized that you don’t like it.

Choosing a room`s color

It’s probably the thing we less worry about, but the rooms’ color is a very important matter to think about. Many of us have a favorite color, or saw a nice color somewhere and it’s decided. What we seldom think about is that the color of the room is the first thing to pick out and what gives the mood of the room. Then, there’s the furniture and the whole decoration which has to go accordingly to the paint work. So, what can help us on deciding the color of a room? When you renovate your home, it’s a good idea to write down all the rooms you have. Next to each room, make a list of keywords specific for the room in hand, and what you do in that room. For example the bedroom is a place where you mostly sleep, and before sleep you stare at the walls. You need to relax, you need peace and quiet. You will probably need a list of moods you mostly have in every room. Sometimes calm, other times stressed, energetic and so on. Try to say the mood in your head and wait for the first color that comes in hour head. Don’t think of colors, think of states of mind, mood and activities. For example say “sleep, quiet, dream” and associate them with a color. The reason why there’s no rule for a particular room color in all homes is that we all respond differently to colors. You will see that most of the times, bathrooms are white and recently blue. This is because white is the color for purity, hygiene. Lime used for sterilization is white and this is a rather general rule in people’s mind. But this does not apply for everyone. I could tell a few conventional rules about colors but that would mean that we all apply to those rules. Yes, you can do that in fashion or decorating a public space, but in your home, you don’t have to follow conventions, you have to follow your own moods and their corresponding colors.

Another thing you could do is paint the room after a piece of furniture that caught your attention and intend placing in that room. It is not wrong, because the selected item is the reflection of you mood as well. When you have the object, choose the paint that matches it and work around them to make everything else match. If you have a crowded room, the walls won’t be the element that gives the predominant color in your room. It will be the furniture, so put more accent on that. However, if you choose to keep it simple, with few pieces of furniture and decorations, choose the color wisely, because it’s going to be the element that gives the general aspect.

When choosing the color of the room, you will probably look at different shades of the same color. This go from a lighter one to a very dark. A powerful, juicy shade for walls and a lighter shade for furniture is not such a good idea. It will look like a dungeon. Keep the walls more subtle with a light shade and bring out the rest of your room with the accents in the furniture or other objects. Also, the room will appear to be larger if painted in light colors. But, if you want a feeling of intimacy, you can go with the darker shades. Make sure you have smooth transitions between rooms, especially if they are not separated by doors. Don’t use shocking contrasts because they “hurt” your eyes, just like walking out of a dark church into the bright sunlight.

Don’t rely on the sample colors given in stores or on the paint cover. Take a piece of wood, paint it in the desired color and take it in the room throughout the day. Place it on the wall and see how the color behaves in different lighting. Imagine how the whole room would look like and living in this color for a few years. Don’t make hasty choices, take your time in thinking it through. Think about this a few weeks before getting ready for redecoration. It’s not a thing you afford to neglect, and I’m not talking finances.

Modern vs. Classic

brown room

I am talking about furniture, of course. I have old, classical furniture in my home from my mother. It would be a pity to throw it away, given that I grew up with it. But when I go out to buy something new, I can’t find anything classical to go with it. So I go for the modern pieces. How do these two mix? Let’s find out.

It is not wrong or gaudy to mix them. In fact, if you make the right choices and arrangements, you can bring out the quality in both styles. Remember, not every piece matches, it is not an easy task! You have to do the right matches to obtain quality, and as usual, you have to follow a few steps:

1. The first thing you have to think of is a common feature in both styles. This can be a color, an accent, a decoration, an accessory. This will help you homogenize the pieces of furniture, unifying the whole.

bedside table2. If the modern style is predominant, be careful what classical items you choose. Place these items in a more decorative, than functional way. For example, placing an old bedside table in a modern room is a good idea, but don’t keep all your stuff on it. A nice little clock that goes with it will do. Otherwise, it’ll look out of it’s place.

3. A heavily decorated furniture can bring down and darken the rooms atmosphere. Try balancing this with modern accessories. A beautiful sculpted table can be brightened up with a few modern, ’60′s chairs, like this Brno model. This rule goes with the entire texture of the room. There’s nothing wrong in mixing the natural, floral, random lines of carved decorations, with the straight and smooth lines of the modern style.

brno chair4. When you’re done, don’t stand in the middle of the room and admire it. Don’t even try to evaluate your work from this position. You want a more objective point of view. Try taking a picture from a corner, going in the kitchen and looking at the picture. You’ll have a clearer vision of it. Show it to your friends or even strangers, without telling them anything. See their reaction.

5. Never-ever cut the room in half. Don’t do something stupid like arranging in classical style around your bed, and doing a modern decoration in the other corner of the room. It’s just disgusting. Mix them so you can’t feel the two styles separately, make them blend together so that when you look at the room, you can’t decide what style it is, but if you look at the pieces separately, you can tell.

Bathroom themes

shelfAn interesting idea in decorating a bathroom, or as a matter of fact any room, is to give it a theme. For example, let’s take an upstairs bathroom, in an all-boys family. What is the favorite time-spend of little boys? Sports, of course. So, you have the theme, get equipped and right to work. Be sure to buy anything that goes in a bathroom in a sports theme: towels, soap holders, shampoo bottles, faucets, stickers for the tiles or walls, rubber toys and so on. When working with a specific theme, avoid mixing in another one. You wouldn’t like a Barbie towel in an all-boys bathroom. When choosing the color, go for bright. Bright is the symbol of life, and that’s what sport is all about. Go for a white, or bright blue vanity, green floor tiles, anything you like. Let your children help in. Don’t try to think of style and fashion. Children have no sense of that. The bright colors will also give you and your children the illusion of space in your bathroom, which is usually a small place. Be sure to put shelves at both child and adult level, but the second one is optional. If it’s your son’s bathroom, you shouldn’t keep things that he doesn’t need in there.

laundrybasketballI found this little shelf and hanger, perfect for your purpose. You can use it to store his shampoos, conditioners, lotions, toothpaste etc. and his clothes and towels on the hangers. This can save you the picking up up of wet towels from the floor. A second option would be this great basketball themed laundry sack. It saves up space and your child can have fun doing “sock-dunks” in it. For rugs, I suggest rubber back rugs to save up some serious slipping on the wet floor. Not so hard to find, these rugs come in different shapes and sizes, illustrating different sports.

Remember to let the kid(s) help you and have fun decorating together. Just don’t get mad if your husband uses their bathroom, too.

All about pink and green

The new black & white. These two colors are very, very used in modern decorations, partly because they’re so bright, and they catch your attention, and probably it has to do with fashion too. One of the reasons these colors match must be because the trend today is contrast, and we all know that red and green are complementaries, so pink and bright green are too. Another reason can be found in nature, especially in flowers. I think I don’t have to explain neither of them, we all know we can find all the green we like, and pink is very easy to find as well.

Let’s see some examples of how pink and green can be mixed.

pink_green1One of the options is evenly (red and green complement each other in a 50:50 proportion). We can start off with a pink room and decorating with green accents and pieces of furniture in such way that the whole room seems evenly divided between the two colors. Rugs, shelves, curtains, chairs, objects, all of them can be found in the desired shade of green to complete the contrast.

pink_green2This next room is decorated in a less contrasted way due to the more subtle accents of green. Although pink is predominant, the pink in the curtains and bed sheets gives the whole room a more mysterious and dark look. One thing to remember is that if you want one of the colors to be predominant, keep it light, so that the other one can show itself too, in a similar proportion.

pink_green3.jpgHere we have what it seems to be a classical “pink princess palace”. WRONG! If you look closely you can see the subtle green accent, hidden in the bedroom objects and patterns. This breaks the average pink girly look of the room without giving it a brutal, tasteless aspect. I think it’s perfect for your teenage daughter, she’ll feel like a princess in it.

pink_green4In this example, there is a contrast even on the wall. Half, or one third of it is green, and the rest is white. I would do the top part in very light pink to be on topic, and leave the bright pink headboard of the bed to contrast with the green. It’s just amazing and think of how your child would feel like in this room. As a matter of fact, imagine how YOU would feel in this room!

pink_green5We can’t exclude other bright colors with the combination. As you can see, besides decorating a whole room, pink and green can also spice up the atmosphere in various color rooms. Mixing them with blue, orange, purple and yellow is a good idea for decorating a “unisex” child bedroom. Adding different colors to repeating shapes also gives an exciting, dynamic look to the room and furniture.

pink_green6This is a great example of spicing up a neutral colored room, like this one, with white furniture. The new green paint job and the pink chair can do wonders to a room, that initially looks like a hospital hall. A few in-theme object, some bed sheets, perhaps a new pink rug can add a little more, for less money than changing the entire furniture.
