Mirrors, mirrors on the wall

mirrors

Don’t look too deep, you’ll get hypnotized. Just kidding. No, they are not bubbles painted on the wall, they are actually mirrors attached to a metallic skeleton meant to be hanged on the wall to amaze your guests. They look splashing in a modern home, and with the proper lighting, you can get the most amazing effects out of them. Disco balls are old school. This is modern, this is lunatic. And it’s not that expensive either. Depends how much you have to spare, as always.

Seating out of the ordinary

What seating would go next to a fireplace or in a basement children’s playroom? I think ordinary chairs or couches are out of date so the first thing that came to my mind was the blow-up mattress that I always see on those commercials. I said to myself “No, those products are good for nothing, I won’t buy anything from them”. The next thing would be the bean bag chairs. I have always wanted one of those and never had one. As I searched the internet, I found out that the bean bags are not the only product from this category. There are the bean pucks, which are built similar to the bags, but are smaller, and occupy less space when not needed. Then we have the bean cubes, which are a little taller and offer some back support.

And to top it off with something different, I found some sort of cushion mats that can be easily folded to serve as a bed, sofa or a floor pillow. It looks very comfortable and it combines the form and the function in a very intelligent way. I might as well go for this one, and leave the beans for later.

Window decoration

window panelIf you live in an apartment it’s most probable that you have at least one stupid window that spoils the view. Mine is above my front door, a rectangular, clean, but unnecessary window. Many of my neighbors took the easy, uninspired way of taking out the window frame and cementing the gap. I, for one, did a little research. The idea came from all that talk about wallpapers and wallies, I couldn’t imagine they don’t make something I could use here. So, a few hours of browsing the internet ended up with finding the perfect solution, for me, at least: decorative window panels. Just like wallpapers, they are “stickers” that you put on your windows to give them the look you want. In this example it is stained glass, but there are many more themes. Find the one that fits your style and leave your boring windows standing. Instead of ridding yourself from light, gain some colored, varied light to enhance the feeling in your rooms.

Placing the toilet

cutting tile around toilet

I was writing a few days ago about placing fixtures on top of the tiles instead of putting the tiles around them. I forgot to mention that is to be done after placing the tiles. After all, the toilet has a drain, which you have to mount (if you don’t want to bring a plumber). Well, the drain is a small circle in the bottom of the toilet, fairly smaller than the toilets area. This means we don’t need a perfect cut for the drain as the toilet will cover a larger area around the hole. The first thing to be done is figuring out where the hole will go. Place the toilet in its final position and mark out the circular area where the hole will be cut. After you’ve obtained the circle, because it is rather difficult to cut a circle, you will cut an octagon around it. That means eight straight cuts around the circle, and the hole for our toilet is ready. You can use a wet-saw or an electrical hand-grinder with a diamond-tipped blade for this operation. The larger the difference between the drain diameter and the toilets area, the more liberty in movement.

Another blind problem…

white blindsA quick scenario: we have white trimmed windows and any kind of woof furniture. We want to install blinds but can’t decide what kind to match with the windows AND the interior. Well, as we all know, white blinds came to trend a few years ago. The short version is: problem solved. The longer version contains the explanation. White windows look very good with any kind of furniture, wall color and curtains. So will the white blinds, plus they will give a little elegance to the room, elegance that couldn’t have been obtained with the windows alone. A little harder to keep clean, but worth the additional effort, trust me. One more thing, go for the wooden blinds, the plastic ones may be cheaper, but not as efficient, good looking and long lasting. In short, wooden blinds are better quality.

The dilemma of wallpapers

wall muralMany of us wonder if we should use wallpapers or not. Opinions are various: when you think of removing wallpapers, you would say no (if you know what I am talking about). But when you think of how easily you can get a good look for your rooms, you say yes. Another factor is that wallpapers are kind of out of trend. But to keep the business going, wallpaper manufacturers came up with new ideas and products. For example the photo wall murals, which work like ordinary wallpapers, but can be customized to your tastes and bring a touch of originality to your interiors. Another option are wallies, I have been talking about in another articles, which again, work like wallpapers, only they come as smaller shapes used in decorating any kind of wall. As I explained in the other article, they come in various themes, shapes and colors. Some are even (re)movable, to change the configuration of the accents as and when you like.

I know I shouldn’t tell you this but I feel it as my obligation: don’t use wallpapers in bathrooms and kitchens. For one, wallpapers and water (moisture) are rivals and it could get a pretty difficult job trying to squeeze in the fix-size wallpapers on the small walls with lots of corners and frequent outlets and fixtures.

And as a compromise, if you like the look of a wallpaper but don’t want the fuss of the technique, try to reproduce its look with a paint job. It can be an interesting activity but if the result is good, you will feel much more satisfied.

The chicken and the egg problem…solved!

toiletRecently I was present at one of my neighbors as he was redecorating his bathroom. As I stood there and chatted with the man, a guy was working on the tiles. I happened to know that he changed his fixtures and almost all of the bathroom, except for the tub. So, the guy laying down the tiles was cutting them to fit around the toilet. I asked my neighbor why didn’t he have the tiles put down BEFORE the fixtures? He said he hadn’t thought of it because it was natural for him first to call the electrician, then the plumber and last, the painters ant tilers. So I told him how unprofessional it will look if he cuts the tiles around the toilet and sink. Not to mention that now, if he wants to change to a smaller size one, he will get a gap. If he wants a larger…it won’t fit. It would have been much easier to do the tiling first, and then install the fixture, and cut the gap just for the pipes. Well, I agree with the tub, it is not so often changed and it would be a larger waste of tile to put under the tub or an eventual shower. So the lesson here is, first the tub or shower, then the tiles and finally the fixtures.

Wine rack…not for wine

wine rack

I’ve seen several homes with built-in wine racks and I started wondering what would I do if I bought a home like that? Since it’s built-in, I wouldn’t want to ruin the unity of the decoration, but I don’t store wine. If I want to drink a glass, I go down to the store, buy a bottle, drink my glass and put the bottle in the fridge. What do I need a wine rack for? On the other hand, I wouldn’t pass out buying a great house just because it HAS something I don’t need.

So, as I said, I started thinking of other uses for the wine rack. I ruled out the possibility of a mixed cabinet or shelf. I would rather give it a unique, uniform use. For example, it would be a good place to store my dishtowels, which I would buy in different colors, just for the sake of decorating my wine rack. Or come to think of it, any colors would be great, as long as it is done with style. All white, or all red, or a two color pattern, anything that passes your mind.

The old wine rack could be a great place to hold your own cooking magazines, or any kinds of magazines that you gladly re-read while a meal is getting done. Just fold them in half an you’ll see how easy they fit, just like you put them under your arm-pit. Same goes for newspapers or comic books, too.

Just because it’s a WINE rack, it doesn’t mean that other kinds of bottles don’t fit. Try your juice, soda, beer or anything drinkable. Just don’t put detergent bottles in there. Trust me…it won’t look good!

If you have some at home, or if you can buy them from a store (they are not so expensive), try putting some tall storage containers that fit in the racks, for storing beans, rice, sugar, candy, flour and so on…

If you have any more ideas, you are welcome to post them in the comments area.

Basement flooring

Decorating the basement has spread a lot in the last years, even though basements are not made for living in. One of the biggest problems in a basement is flooring. Basements are cold, wet and dark, so wood flooring is not strongly discouraged, though not impossible. However, I want to focus on tiles, because mainly, we bring up kitchens and bathrooms in the basement (another thing that excludes wood). The problem is, tiling is cold as it is especially on a basement floor. Insulating with plywood is not recommended because of the moist and because it raises the floor a lot (we’re speaking of 5 centimeters or so which in a basement can be vital). So my choice would be the more and more popular heat blankets installed under the tiles. They come in different sizes, are becoming cheaper and cheaper, and they get the job done.

rug and tiles

Of course, you can always go for the carpet-over-all method, which is probably cheaper, but then why would you put down tiles? And carpet on concrete is kinda sick too.

Be careful with removing popcorn ceilings…

You bought a new home in an old building. The first thing that catches your eyes is the dust in the popcorn ceiling. You thought of remodeling so, it MUST go! The question is how? Yes, you can be brutal, grab your sander and do a massacre. Well, good thing you didn’t and instead read this article first.

Asbestos is a frequently used substance used in old buildings for insulation, decoration or other purposes. It’s very contaminant and you wouldn’t want to inhale it weeks after sanding. Find out whether your walls contain asbestos by taking a sample to a local lab. If they do, you have a problem and it is recommended you hire professionals to deal with it. If you get a green sign, feel free to “demolish” your ceiling. Or, if you want a minimum of damage, again, I suggest professionals who usually finish of both problems in one day. And it’s not too expensive either.
